Irish Tech Challenge South Africa 2024 showcased seven innovative start-ups, paving the way for collaboration between South African entrepreneurs and Irelands tech sector.

The Irish Tech Challenge South Africa 2024 recently highlighted seven exceptional tech start-ups at Wits University’s Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct.

Now in its third year, this prestigious initiative is a collaboration between the Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, Wits University, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), and Dogpatch Labs Ireland.

The challenge aims to foster strong, mutually beneficial partnerships between South African entrepreneurs and Ireland’s globally recognised technology sector.

The selected start-ups showcased innovative solutions aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the event, which served as a precursor to their upcoming intensive acceleration program with Dogpatch Labs in Dublin this September.

The start-up businesses previewed at the Irish Tech Challenge aim at building sustainability in SA.

It provided a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with the entrepreneurs, learn about their groundbreaking solutions, and explore the potential impact of their work on both local and global markets.

Key representatives from the Embassy of Ireland, Wits University, DSI, and Dogpatch Labs were present, facilitating in-depth discussions about the significance of this partnership and its role in supporting South African tech entrepreneurs.

Ambassador of Ireland Austin Gormley emphasised the importance of exchange and mutual learning within the partnership. “Ireland is invested in South Africa’s success, making this a key initiative for idea-sharing between our two countries,” he stated.

Gormley expressed hope that the participating companies would achieve long-term success, noting, “the seeds we are laying here will pay dividends for years to come.” He praised the seven start-ups for their market understanding and potential for international growth, highlighting the clear vision driving their innovative services.

• Adbot (Michelle Geere): Simplifies online advertising for small and medium businesses.

• Credipple (Kgololo Lekoma): Connects companies globally to trusted talent with in-demand skills.

• Samanjalo (Prudence Simelane): Reduces carbon emissions by extending the circularity of coal waste.

• Smartview Technology (Charnte Marthinus): Offers a simplified utility management platform focused on innovation and sustainability.

• Athena (Jabulani Nyembe): Allows patients to split medical bills into manageable monthly installments.

• The Awareness Company (Priaash Ramadeen): A data and AI company that makes data accessible and enjoyable for businesses.

• Momint (Ahren Posthumus): An asset marketplace for global fractional funding and trading of renewable energy assets.
