Let Linde Sibanda have you laughing the night away

Comedian Linde Sibanda uses personal experiences, as well as the generic experiences of average South Africans for his comedy.

If laughter be the best medicine, then comedian, Linde Sibanda’s medicine cupboard is chock-full with laughs, ready to make your evening all the more better. His comedy show, I Think Therefore I Joke, plans to have audiences entertained by his wit and comedic references to his life experiences the whole night through at Linden based Joons Art Bar on August 30 and 31.

For Sibanda, making people laugh is important as it has the power to bring people together, and bring them joy. “To be the vessel that carries this out is such an underrated quality,” he said. Adding that as people, we deal with so much on a daily basis, and if these experiences can be morphed into laughter, it makes life that much easier to get through.

As the ‘class clown’, the classroom was his first stab at entertaining an audience. It was here that he very quickly found out that people related to him more because he was funny. “I knew I may be on to something when some of the teachers would laugh at my antics.” Through the years, he has found it easier to personalise serious situations as it has become important for him to actually care about what he is speaking about. “I don’t think it’s worthwhile to be controversial just for the sake of being controversial, which is where serious situations can tend to lean,” he said.

For his shows, outside of drawing heavily from his personal experience, he also regularly draws from the experiences of the average South African. Describing his shows as a balance of his perspective on his life and other issues without neglecting his audience. Sibanda said traits of a great audience are a group of people who have an openness to ideas. They recognise that they too are part of the comedy show, and they’re there to laugh.

Covid-19 showed that life behind the comedic mic is not all belly laughs as it has had a lasting impact on the industry. This is apparent through there not being any active comedy clubs in the country right now. “We need more investment in the industry to cultivate growth and to make comedy a staple in South African minds.”

Sibanda hopes his comedy inspires people to live out their dreams and pursue their God given talents. He also hopes to help people start conversations on issues that affect us as South Africans, and how we can build a stronger more united nation.
