Growing Champions break cycles of violence

In the face of violence and adversity, Growing Champions are empowering South African youth to break free from destructive cycles and create a brighter future.

With Women’s Day on the horizon, Growing Champions, an organisation dedicated to helping at-risk youth in South Africa, is making strides in empowering young individuals to reach their full potential.

Founded by Samantha Toweel-Moore, Growing Champions aims to break the destructive cycles that at-risk youth are born into, providing them with love, purpose, and opportunities for growth through education, sports, personal development, and spiritual growth.

Moore expressed that in a country scarred by violence, addiction, and trauma, many South African citizens have grown up in communities plagued by murders, rapes, and violence. “We recognised the urgent need to address these issues and give these individuals the chance to experience basic human rights and a safe environment in which to grow.”

By customising their care to each child’s unique experiences, Growing Champions serves as a mentorship programme, addressing every aspect of their lives.

“As young individuals transition into adulthood and become school leaders, they carry the mission of Growing Champions into their communities, sparking positive change through their own stories.”

Moore stated that each person identifies their area of transformation, becoming a contributor in their own right. “One area of focus for Growing Champions is the protection and empowerment of young women, who are particularly vulnerable to sexual assault while carrying out daily tasks such as fetching food for their families.”

She realised that a place of safety specifically for young girls was necessary.

Moore mentioned by overcoming challenges, including the need to shift the mindset of young men who had been taught oppressive behaviours, Growing Champions worked to create an environment where girls are respected and not objectified.

“The journey of Growing Champions lies at the intersection of healthy living and the world of trauma and chaos, ” she said.
“ Rather than eradicating the cultural gems and inheritances of these communities, we seek to help individuals embrace their inheritance while letting go of harmful aspects. This transformative process has been a learning curve for everyone involved, uncovering the beauty within each person.”

Moore’s vision has paved the way for a brighter future, where every individual, regardless of their circumstances, can break free from the chains that bind them and become catalysts for positive change within their communities.
