Raise a glass to NMT’s 50th birthday

Discover the story behind half a century of local news and community spirit.

Aimee McGill, editor of Northcliff Melville Times writes:

I was in Grade 11, what feels like a hundred years ago, when my English teacher at the time, the inimitable Mrs Jean McKaig called me aside after class one day and asked me what I was going to do when I left school. Unsure of myself, I told her that I had two dreams, one to be a teacher, and the other, to be a journalist.

Without hesitation, she told me to choose journalism, and perhaps against my better judgement, I listened.

Fast forward though university, my cub reporting and news editor years, and here I sit as editor of the best community newspaper in South Africa, according to the Forum of Community Journalists.

The editor’s chair offers a unique perspective of communities, and the people living within them. As we celebrate Northcliff Melville Times’’ 50th year, I look upon the community we serve with such pride. The stories we get to tell as community journalists in this area are so diverse, and this is a tremendous privilege, and responsibility that we don’t take lightly.

This role has also given me the opportunity to work with many young enthusiastic journalists, who I have been privileged enough to help nurture into strong, confident media minds. It is with this that I realise how right Mrs McKaig was. Through journalism I have had the opportunity to achieve both my dreams – to teach and to tell, and I am so grateful for the platform I have been given to do this.

A newspaper is more than just journalists and editors though, so I take this opportunity to congratulate the entire NMT team – editorial, sales, admin, management, distribution – everyone involved in getting the paper to your door every Tuesday. We do this job with passion and pride.

I will never stop working to serve this community, because that is what you deserve. We will continue to innovate and inform far beyond the next 50 years, and promise to always be the voice of our readers. Happy 50th anniversary, NMT – onwards and upwards.
