18-year-old UJ student explains science

From a young age, I spent countless hours exploring the outdoors and conducting my own experiments. As I grew older, my passion for science only intensified.

My name is Likhona Sidamba, I am 18 years old, and I am studying analytical chemistry at the University of Johannesburg.

Analytical chemistry is mainly focused on laboratory research, product development, and the analysis of substances. My main focus is drug development, which is more about determining the quality and sustaining the ability of drug products to ensure the safety of drugs for people.

Chemists play a significant role in the development of modern medicine. I chose this course because I wanted to be the one helping people. I want to be able to manufacture and develop new cures that are more effective in treating diseases. In this course, I have learned about the various fields of medicine, such as pharmacology, immunology, and genetics.

I have also gained knowledge of the different types of drugs and their mechanisms of action. Additionally, I have been exposed to the latest technologies used in drug discovery and development.

One of the most interesting topics we covered was personalized medicine, which involves tailoring treatments to an individual’s genetic makeup. This approach has the potential to revolutionise healthcare by providing more targeted and effective treatments.

Overall, this course has given me a solid foundation in pharmaceuticals and inspired me to pursue a career in drug development. With my newfound knowledge and skills, I am confident that I can make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of modern medicine.

In the next five years, I want to be one of the most recognised women in the field of science. By doing so, I am planning on working hard to achieve my dreams and make my parents, and myself proud.
