Wits University broke ground on a R250-million sports complex that will see construction completed by 2025.

The complex, which is named the Wits Brian and Dorothy Zylstra Sports Complex will boast features such as therapeutic facilities, an aquatics centre, and a 44-bed residence for elite athletes.

In his address to attendees, vice-chancellor Zeblon Vilakazi said former ‘Witsies’ Brian and Dorothy Zylstra had gone on to do great things for the country through their Skye Foundation. The foundation was founded almost two decades ago, and among other functions, awards scholarships to dean-nominated postgraduates who show excellence. “This Wits Brian and Dorothy Zylstra Sports Complex is a flagship, one-of-a-kind centenary project that promises world-class facilities,” said Vilakzi.

He added this would not just be a facility but a commitment to providing the best possible environment for students to excel in their academic life as well as their chosen sports field. “Today we mark the beginning of a new era of our university sports culture. I am confident that this sports complex will be a catalyst for our students’ growth and student mental wellness, as sports is central to that.”

Speaking on behalf of his family, Phil Zylstra said they felt the complex would be a landmark building and a resource, not only for Wits but for the schools and sporting organisations in South Africa and abroad. “It will be a fitting testament to my parents, Brian and Dorothy, and a sign of gratitude for the role the university played in many of our lives.”
