General Valuation Roll deadline extended

The 2023 General Valuation Roll's inspection and objection period has been extended by a month.

Good news for Johannesburg property owners. The City of Johannesburg has granted property owners an extension on the inspection and objection period for the 2023 General Valuation Roll 9 (GVR). GVR is a legal property document of all rateable properties within the boundaries of a municipality.

On March 27, the city’s communications and stakeholder engagement director, Kgamanyane Maphologela said the inspection and objection period was extended after taking into consideration that most customers had not received their Section 49 notices yet. A Section 49 notice informs property owners of the amount their property has been valued that year by the municipal valuer. The 2023 GVR period has been pushed back by a month, from March 31 to May 5, 2023.

“The extension period demonstrates the city’s willingness to become customer-centric and responsive to residents. The extension should be an example that we are a city that listens to its stakeholders, and we hope this will afford all the residents enough time to object against any entry of their property should they wish to do so,” said Maphologela.

According to Maphologela, anyone can inspect the valuation roll within the inspection period, and lodge an objection against any of the entries that appear in the Valuation Roll.
