Airwaves speak of safety on UJFM

Brixton Police Station recently held a crime-awareness campaign at the University of Johannesburg.

Brixton Police Station spent the morning on the University of Johannesburg’s UJFM in an effort to give students much-needed safety tips to help protect them from crimes.

The station’s Vispol Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Samson Mkhonto Mkhwanazi, as well as its communication officer, Jeantte Backhoff, led the conversation.

While on UJFM, the pair shared information with students about crimes that impact them most on and off campus, and safety tips were also provided.

They highlighted hotspots where students are prone to become victims of crime, and students were urged to rather walk in groups to and from campus and refrain from walking alone.

Even though the police, assisted by security companies, are doing everything possible to keep students safe, their cooperation is needed to safeguard their own property/valuables.

Backhoff said the station works hand in hand with UJ Protection Services and Security Companies to conduct crime-prevention operations and crime awareness campaigns to keep students as well as the community safe . “Therefore, more of these will be held to enable us to reach as many of our young people as possible to curb crime and ensure a safe and secure community for all.”

Students were also encouraged to report cases as soon as possible so that SAPS can collect all evidence and bring the perpetrators to justice and if possible, link them to other cases.

“These door-to-door awareness campaigns will be held more frequently to ensure that students are well educated about crime and know what to do in a situation when they encounter it,” added Backhoff.
