City fills hole after councillors fears come true

Johannesburg Water has finally closed a dangerous repair hole along Beyers Naude Drive.

Only days after Ward 88 councillor Nicolene Jonker raised concerns about a Johannesburg Water (JW) hole on Beyers Naude Drive being a danger to motorists, a car crashed into it.

Local resident Andrew Gaul said, “These roadworks are not well demarcated and do not have sufficient warnings in place indicating the danger posed.”

The site of year-long repairs by JW on Beyers Naude near Westpark Cemetery has since been backfilled following the incident.

“Johannesburg Water does not know what caused the accident because the hole is on the side of the road. The car had been left abandoned for two days before it was impounded by JMPD and the hole closed,” said JW spokesperson Puleng Mopeli.

She added the City was experiencing ongoing issues with ageing infrastructure which caused frequent water bursts and leaks.

Ward 88 councillor Nicolene Jonker said, “I am relieved the hole has been repaired after such a long time. But I am disappointed that it had to take such an incident like this for it to happen.”
