Local artist used Covid-19 lockdown to launch dream career

Melville-based painter, Stephen Hauser, captures unique scenes and concepts in striking artworks.

Stephen Hauser is a modest man who found the courage to follow his passion for art after being retrenched when the Covid-19 pandemic changed the world.
The Melville resident hopes his act of bravery to become a full-time artist will pay off.

“Art has always been a part of my life but I seldom found the time to dedicate myself to creating as I had full-time jobs which always kept me busy.”

His art, mostly paintings, is contemporary in style and tends to be people-based rather than abstract. “I don’t do portraits often but really enjoy including people as part of a scene I am depicting.” He described landscapes as a more recent passion following a trip to Nieu-Bethesda in the Eastern Cape.

Hauser described the collecting of original artwork as not only something which brought pleasure to the owner and beautifies the space it will inhabit but also a purchase that would never depreciate. It had inherent value and in some cases, works of art could be worth quite a lot of money in years to come.

“An unknown artist today could become very well known in the future, one never knows. The cost of artwork needs to be thought of in terms of creativity, the hours and hours spent creating the piece, materials, and blood and sweat that artists put into their work.”

He sells pieces from as little as R500 up to several thousand, so there is something for everyone if they would like original artwork in their home or office.

Recently, in galleries in Melville and Pretoria, he has successfully shown various artworks which by all accounts are landing well with the public. Hauser hoped to have another exhibition in the city soon but encouraged people to reach out to him and see for themselves what he was creating and what offerings he had available for purchase.
