Pets cared for by PAIN volunteers in an underprivileged community

PAIN volunteers work tirelessly to improve the lives of dogs in townships and informal settlements.

Pets and Animals In Need (PAIN) hosted their annual community event aimed at providing sterilisations for dogs and cats whose owners struggle to afford them.

Held at the Fred and Martie soup kitchen, PAIN stepped in with vigour and enthusiasm to ensure the pets of people needing support due to financial reasons were also looked after.

Megan Hart and Estelle Smith from Underdogs SA and Lindi Gasson from PAIN enjoyed the day which saw so many animals recieve help.

Over 70 animals were booked for sterilisations, and 167 were seen by trained volunteers who identified eight as needing additional help with follow-up appointments being made.

A raffle was held for amazing prizes, colouring in competitions for children, pet food was provided to needy families, and talks were given to community members who came to enjoy the day.

Founder of PAIN, Karen Loots said, “We cannot thank our incredible volunteers enough for all of their hard work and dedication to helping animals. To our partners on the day, Underdog SA, Global Estates Platinum, Curro Rivonia, MISA motor association, Cat Box, RK Photography and so many more, we could not have done this without you.”

A sweet dog being held by it’s owner looks happy after being looked after by volunteers at the community outreach day.

PAIN is an NGO that runs with support from vets, vets in training, and a host of committed volunteers who make all of their outreach projects possible. They rely on donations for expensive vets’ bills that arise from sterilisations, vaccinations, food and items needed to care for pets in townships and informal settlements.

Estelle Smith from Underdog SA gives a dog a cuddle which is being held by owner Roan Fernandez a PAIN volunteer.

They have a monthly clinic in Kya Sands if someone would like to have their pet checked.
