Bantwana College NPC Girls FC compete in return of women’s football tournament

Nine all-women football teams from in and around Johannesburg will compete for three weekends.

The Randpark Ridge-based women’s team Bantwana College NPC Girls Football Club competed in the inaugural JoWest Local Football Association (LFA) women’s football tournament at the Westbury Mabaleng AstroTurf.

According to head coach Theo Buttress, the re-ignition of the women’s football tournament saw nine teams from Johannesburg competing.
“There was a decline in participation over the past few years due to various factors with the major factors being the pandemic, poverty and lack of funds young girls have to travel to and from the various venues the LFA provided for the training and football games,” said Buttress.

JoWest LFA chairman Reiwan Sallie said women’s football played a vital role in the current footballing world and welcomed all women who were interested in playing in the wonderful game.

The tournament is played over three weekends and the semi-final and final games are scheduled for October 30. The teams participating are Bantwana FC 1, Bantwana FC 2, Dynasty Ladies 1, Dynasty Ladies 2, Hatfield VW, Johannesburg Ladies, Ibhubhesi Ladies, Espanyol and Midas Ladies.
The JoWest LFA is an affiliate of the South African Football Association Johannesburg and has been running girls’ and women’s football development programmes since its establishment in 2006.
