Melville’s unassuming artist

In her at home studio, local artist shares on her love for art.

Artist, author, counsellor and self-proclaimed creative nut, Marian Hammon is probably one of those quintessential neighbours.

You know, the sort that finds pleasure in the smallest things, such as walking the dog, selling artworks at the local market and, among other great facets, being a good mother and wife.

A lover of all things creative, she has always had a stream of creative ideas flow through her mind. In primary school, she loved music and played the flute, then later in her life after seeing a poster for art classes, she thought ‘why not join’?

Art, for her, gives her a peaceful space, one where she can sit and focus and once she’s done, looks back at what she has created and thinks ‘wow, did I actually paint that, where did it come from?’

She said life could, at times, seem boring and that her love for colour helped to uplift her and paint a smile on her face. One of her most memorable works using watercolour is a painting of flowers.

A few years ago, the Melville resident wrote a book As The Crow Flies which she described as an inspirational book that depicted plants and animals together. “A plant and animal says a lot about who you are,” she said.

A tarot card reader, Hammon has people choose a card and from it, she interprets what it means about that person based on the researched information found in her book which ties in all the aspects she finds great joy in.

Hammon advocated that art was therapeutic and was for everyone to try out.
