One local youth shares her love for the moon

Local youth shares on her deep appreciation for the moon.

For Vuyolwethu Mphambani, her love for the moon has left sky gazing since one special car ride.

The local youth shares her story:

When I was young, I watched the moon through the window from the backseat of a car as it followed me everywhere I went.
Something about its luminous light drew my attention and over the years I’ve fallen in love with the moon.

There is something ethereal about the moon. Its endearing glow speaks a thousand words when the world is silent. Looking at it from my bedroom window is an emotion that only my heart and mind know.

I see the moon and feel things, it’s hard to explain, I even leave my curtains open every night just for the moon so its light can shine down in my room and paint silver on my sheets.

Sitting in a quiet garden at night, and only having the moonlight accompanying me is nothing but heavenly. It is a loyal companion that is always there, watching us love, cry, laugh and eventually take our last breath.

Just like us, it goes through chapters of emptiness to feel whole again. It’s kind of weird to think a spherical object hundreds of thousands of kilometres away from the earth – a rock – could be so breathtaking.

Being a selenophile (one who loves the moon) is so unreal and unexplainable. As English poet William Blake once said, ‘The moon, like a flower in heaven’s high bower, with silent delight, sits and smiles in the night.’
