Joint sting operation leads to three arrests in Bosmont

Sophiatown and Langlaagte police join forces in operation to tackle illegal mining.

Sophiatown police received information about illegal mining and an armed suspect in Bosmont.

An operation was launched following observations of the area for a few hours. Police station commanders for Sophiatown and Langlaagte led the operation which led to the arrest of three men and an AK-47 with 86 rounds of live ammunition.

An AK-47 was recovered during the joint operation between Sophiatown and Langlaagte police.

The men will be charged with illegal mining and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Live ammunition and an AK-47 were recovered during the operation.

Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn said, “This operation follows the gruesome find of six bodies recently in the same area who are believed to have been illegal miners.”
