Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys reigns for 120 years

To mark the occasion, the school hosted week long events that were fun for all.

What does the celebration of 120 years of Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys look like?

Well, if you are a current or past learner the answer to that question is simple, it looks like absolute and complete fun.

The school held a variety of special events from September 19 to 24 at the school to mark this great feat, starting with an evening concert held at the school where Afrikaans singer/songwriter Jak de Priester performed. To end off the night, De Piester, along with the school’s choir sang a special song he wrote specially for the school.

What is a celebration without cake? On September 20, learners were treated to some scrumptious cupcakes. A fun aspect that was incorporated here was that the cupcakes were all arranged in the number 120 while the children all sat on the field arranged in the letters ‘LLG.’

The next day was an alumni morning, and here, all the old ‘Louwtjies’ came back to school. Marked as one beautiful morning, this time spent altogether for them was one of great remembrance. It saw guest speakers such as legendary actor Heinrich Marnitz, actress Rika Sennett and singer Andre Swartz share not only their fond memories of their time at school but also how this specific environment helped them become who they are today.

Keeping with the theme of remembrance, the school also had the privilege to host the Geldenhuys family, as the school was named after the family’s patriarch, Lourens Louw Geldenhuys. His great-great-granddaughter, Leanne Nell, read excerpts from a family book Geldenhuys had put together generations ago that the family still keeps today.

By Thursday it was time to hit the greens as a day of golf was planned at Dainfern Golf Course for the parents, while at school, the children took part in some good old-fashioned boer-sport. The good times rolled into Friday when children enjoyed a silent disco and movie night at the school.

The final day of celebrations kicked off with a LindenLoop and here, the school community met early and walked around the community they have been part of for more than a century.

Unique events such as Louwtjies-got-talent and look-a-like competitions were hosted for the children while their parents showed off their potjies-making skills in a competition.

This competition saw 88 pots vie for the best potjie.
