Kaizer Chiefs on top of the leaderboard for the goodnight spectacle

The goodnight spectacle of the Carling Black Label Cup Soweto derby comes to an end on November 12 when the final curtain is pulled over in a floodgates tournament of the Top 4 voted teams of the DStv Premiership.

So far, AmaKhosi Amahle, as Chiefs are known to their die-hard fans countrywide, are on top of the leaderboard having amassed 8 000 votes, 2 000 more than its Soweto arch-rival Orlando Pirates that lies second on the standings.

Masandawana [Mamelodi Sundowns] lie third with 5 000 votes while a neck-on-neck race looms between AmaZulu FC and its newest and fiercest arch-rival in KwaZulu-Natal, the new boys on the block – Royal AM – are hot on their heels with 2 000 votes, with only 600 shy of the Usuthu tally.

The tournament has been described as a goodnight spectacle as it will finally close the curtain on the decade-old Soweto derby that was only reserved for AmaKhosi and the Buccaneers as an off-season spectacle for the two Soweto giants.

Beer brand Carling Black Label has taken on the sponsorship of the now defunct Telkom Knockout Cup which will now be known as the Carling Knockout Cup that launches in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season of the Premier Soccer League.

As a parting shot, the beer brand decided to open the floodgates for all of the 16 premiership teams to be voted to participate in the matches that will start at the semi-final stage with the top four teams with the most votes battling it out for the finals.

Voting closes on October 2 and the final four will be announced the following day, after which the Champion fans will then select their favourite starting line-ups for the four teams up until November 6, six days before the kickoff.

“We negotiated with the Premier Soccer League for a once-off spectacle show that would involve all the teams under the theme ‘Avulekile Amasango’ [the floodgates are open] so that we could open up the spectacle for all 16 teams as a once-off tournament during the window of the Fifa 2022 World Cup in Qatar,” said Carling Black Label brand director Arne Rust.
