The provincial commissioner welcomed the hefty jail sentences handed down to two criminals.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the hefty sentences handed to a duo, aged between 36 and 48 years old, found guilty of murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of ammunition.

In September 2018 a woman was killed and her niece (10) was shot and injured in Westbury after a shoot-out between gang members. Soon after, members of the Anti-Gang Unit, Tactical Response Team, Public Order Policing, Crime Intelligence, the Hawks, Visible Policing and an Investigative Task Team were deployed in

Westbury/Sophiatown to hunt down the suspects and to stabilise the area. Two men were arrested, convicted and now sentenced.

On June 10, the Johannesburg High Court sentenced one of the men to 22 years’ direct imprisonment and the other to 17 years’ direct imprisonment.

Mawela applauded the investigation team led by Warrant Officer Vincent Saunders and the senior state Advocate Zarina Peck who are said to have made sure the criminals paid for their deeds.
