Scoring brace with Emmarentia’s coach Wilson

Supersport United Soccer Schools coach Keenan Wilson shares on his love of the game and of coaching children.

The Northcliff Melville Times headed on over to Marks Park Sports Club recently and there we caught up with young football coach Keenan Wilson who shared his love for the game and his goals which look as though they hit the back of net.

Wilson has been a coach with Supersport United Soccer Schools for the past six years, having joined the organisation after he studied sports management. It was during his studies that he found he had a keen interest in coaching kids in football and their development in this specific sport. “The sporting industry is so broad and you can go in any direction, but I decided coaching football is where I want to be.”

Growing up, there was always football around him as his parents are huge fans of the sport and the community he grew up in were all football lovers too. Being a part of the sports industry has taught him many valuable lessons and a contributing factor to this is the guidance he receives from his peers who he said have also enriched and shaped him.

On this particular training day Wilson was on the pitch coaching football players aged between eight and 11-years-old. The young football players followed his prompts with both eagerness and the motivation to show off the skills their coach had taught them.

In years to come Wilson hopes to see the young footballers he is moulding become the professional athletes they dream to be. Should some not see themselves playing professionally one day, he hopes that his teachings help mould them to be successful individuals who go on to achieve whatever they put their minds to. “It would be great if in a couple of years I’d see someone I had coached share with me what they have managed to become through their time with me.”

Personally, he has been inspired to keep giving his best to this sport and the industry by head coach Marvin Benson who he credits for motivating him and encouraging him to give his best to the children and the sport he loves so much.
