WATCH: Armed robbery leads to shootout in streets of Melville

A man was injured during a shootout between security guards and armed robbers in Melville on June 13.

An innocent bystander has been injured during a shooting in Melville on the morning of June 13.

The incident took place on the corner of 4th Avenue and Main Road just before 09:00.

The driver was shot during an exchange of bullets between robbers stealing from a nearby shop and private security guards.

Andre Aiton managing director at Beagle Watch security said, “A taxi pulled up to the pharmacy and a number of suspects exited the taxi and made their way into the pharmacy. At the time, there were two of our security guards outside the store and they were taken by gunpoint into the store.”

WATCH:

“The suspects took items off the shelves and searched through tills for money. While this was happening, our guards sent a panic button signal, calling for additional support.”

An exchange of gunfire between the security guard and the suspects followed. Aiton said, “This carried on for two to three minutes, with the guard firing from behind a pole, shooting at the suspects. Eventually, the suspects fled the scene in their taxi.”
Brixton Police Station confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Jeanette Backoff unable to confirm how many shots were fired during the incident just yet.
The scene, which has been cordoned off by law enforcement and the police, will remain closed to the public for a few hours.

Forensic investigators and Brixton police officers will investigate the circumstances of what transpired and release a statement soon.

Beagle Watch said it would work hand in hand with officers in order to understand what has transpired.

The Northcliff Melville Times still awaits further comments from Brixton Police Station.

A video of the incident has been sent to Northcliff Melville Times.

This is a developing story.
