Dabulamanzi Canoe Club recently hosted yet another successful surf ski race

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club hosts an exciting surf ski event.

The dam, which is found in Emmarentia, played host to numerous canoeists who quite enjoy cruising down to the coast to participate in surf ski races in the ocean.

“We wish had an ocean in Gauteng to enjoy the wonderful paddling sensation of waves,” said Gauteng Canoe Union media liaison, Jennie Dallas.

She added that some years ago the club started the High Altitude Surf Ski race which has become extremely popular.

Dallas also shared that on the day, paddlers participated in stand-up paddleboard as well as surf ski boats meant for ocean paddling. All of this while the organisers arranged motorboats or jet skis to cruise around the dam in order to make ‘waves’. “The event is always tremendous fun.”

Distances paddlers could enter included the 10km event, as well as a 7km stand-up paddleboard race, and a 3km fun stand-up paddle social event.

This was not an official race so race times were not recorded, however, the 10km event was led by the Euro Steel team, who has well-known internationally recognised top paddlers from South Africa such as Hank and Pippa McGregor in the mixed double, as well as men’s doubles, Wayne Jacobs and Ricci Talevi.
