Welding success at Sparrow FET college

The FET college shares some of the success of its welding class.

Sparrow FET college recently celebrated the success of their welding class which had gone through their welding exit practicals.

There were 25 learners who formed part of this class and so far, six of these learners have gone on to be full-time employed welders.

The FET college‘s Mathapelo Mphirime said this was a one-year learnership, with six months being at the FET college and the other six months being spent at the workplace.

She explained that such classes teach learners to be able to perform a skill and, even if they do not immediately find a job, they can start a business of their own and be able to put bread on the table.

“Also, in our country, we have a shortage of artisans,” Mphirime said. It is important for the FET college to recognise the efforts of their learners as this is a scarce skill. “We also need more ladies to be exposed to this field that is so man-dominated, we need to change it.”
