Students and public to be aware of rise common robbery cases

BRIXTON – Report criminal incidents even if you don’t have insurance so police can investigate possible links to other crimes.

Common robberies and house robberies on the rise once again.

Brixton Police Station urged the public not to be negligent as the number of reported common and house robbery cases increase.

According to station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff for common robberies, students are the prime target. She said, “Many students are walking around with their phones in their hand and earphones visible which shows criminals they have valuables on them. We are asking them and the public to be mindful of criminals waiting to rob them of their belongings.”

Additionally, those outside and around food and drinking establishments are also victims of this, with their phones and bags being snatched from them. With the station among the top 30 stations where common robberies are being reported in the latest crime statistics, the station wants to bring these incidents down as soon as possible.

Backhoff said they will be conducting more patrols along with working with security companies and the community policing forum to bring awareness to the public. The same energy will be given to the growing number of house robberies taking place.

The station is pleaded with the community to report any crime incidents or suspicious activity to their nearest police station.

“We are aware that there are a lot of unreported cases where people don’t have insurance on valuables and, therefore, don’t report the incident. If these cases are not reported possible links to other cases are not made and perpetrators remain at large.”

The public should call 10111 in an emergency, the nearest police station or the flying squad to report to the matter as soon as possible.
