Brixton to host SOPA 2022

BRIXTON – Multiply road closures expected around the multipurpose centre for SOPA 2022.

With the State of the Nation address done and dusted, provinces across the country are gearing up to give an account of where they stand in relation to service delivery and economic growth.

On February 21, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will host their State of the Province Address (Sopa) at the Brixton Multipurpose Centre. According to the GPL, the event marks the opening of the Provincial Parliament. The provincial head of the province Premier David Makhura will deliver a speech in front of members of the provincial executive, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the Secretary under the theme, Following up on our commitment to the people of Gauteng.

The GPL said they were committed to working with the people of Gauteng to build a better province and Sopa will give the Premier the opportunity to reveal the visions and plans in place this year to move Gauteng forward.

The Premier’s address will cover the political and socio-economic state of the province as well as Gauteng Government’s service delivery commitments for the year ahead. At Sopa 2021, Makhura vowed to focus on recovering the provincial economy after the Covid-19 lockdown, improve educational and health standards, reduce crime, protect those vulnerable from urban poverty and hunger and improve the quality of life of residents through service delivery.

A major talking point of last year’s address was the mission to become the country’s cannabis capital by becoming the leader in the development of cannabis in health and pharmaceutical products as one way to stimulate economic growth and development.

Metro police and the police would be present throughout the day to ensure law and order was upheld. Roads around the Brixton Multipurpose Centre would be closed and Metro police would provide details of which specific roads would be affected nearer the time.

Gauteng’s Sopa 2022 will be broadcast live on GPL’s social media pages and the Parliamentary Channel on DSTV.
