Suspects target elderly man

LINDEN – Kidnapped senior citizen given directions to the main road and his two cellphones back.

A 76-year-old man was robbed, hijacked and kidnapped.

Linden police are currently investigating a case in which an elderly citizen suffered the trauma of being targeted by criminals. According to the station’s spokesperson, Constable Takalani Sibiya, the incident took place on January 9 when the complainant was visiting his partner’s house around 19.45pm.

“The victim alleges that after he was approached by four suspects, one with a firearm pointed at him, shortly after parking his Audi A3 outside the premises. The three other suspects pushed him into their car and searched him to find his car keys.”

The victim said that he was sitting face down between two of the suspects and was driven around for hours before stopping at a garage. Sibiya added, “Before they dropped him off, they took his credit card and demanded his pin. They went on to withdraw R6 000 from the card and returned to the vehicle to drive around with him again. The suspects eventually dropped him off on a road the victim was unfamiliar with.”

The man stated that one of the suspects gave him the remote to his property and his two cellphones back stating that they were old. Lastly, the victim was also given directions to the main road where he contacted a friend to come to pick him up.

It was discovered that his vehicle was also taken during the incident. While police investigate the matter, they are warning elderly people to be extra vigilant and refrain from driving after dark and alone as criminals could be targeting them.
