More crime as festive season approaches

BRIXTON – Report criminal incidents even if you don’t have insurance so that possible can investigate possible links to other crimes.

Police continue to urge the public not to be negligent as crime continues to increase.

Brixton police once again call on the public to be careful as the number of house robberies, common robberies and theft of motor vehicles continue to rise. In recent weeks the station has seen an increase in the number of such cases being reported at the station.
Spokeperson Jeanette Backhoff said, “Usually during the months of November and especially, December, we have a lot of cases that are being reported where people fall victims of crime mostly due to negligence. We ask that the public do their part in staying safe by being vigilant at all times and avoid making themselves an easy target to criminals.”

The police have been hosting more patrols to increase their visibility and engage with the public on staying safe during such times. On November 19 the station’s officers spread themselves across their policing precinct to do exactly that.
Backhoff said, “We spent the evening patrolling the areas that have become hotspots for house and common robberies such as Hursthill and Brixton. We also pleaded with people found to be sitting outside their homes with gates wide open, walking the streets with their phones out and those sitting in their vehicles that they are making themselves easy targets to criminals.”
Backhoff added that criminals target these people and within no time disappear with their valuables.

The station also urges the community to report any crime incidents or suspicious activity to their nearest police station. “We are aware that there are a lot of unreported cases where people don’t have insurance on valuables and therefore don’t report the incident. If these cases are not reported possible links to other cases are not made and perpetrators remain at large.”
The public should call 10111 in an emergency resulting in the nearest police station or flying squad to attend to the matter as soon as possible.
