Roosevelt High School opens its grand multipurpose arena

ROOSEVELT PARK – It took about a year to complete the build of the arena which will host indoor activities as well as sports such as, hockey and netball.

Roosevelt High School held the grand opening of their new classrooms and multipurpose arena on November 9.

Guests of this special event were senior members of the Department of Education, primary school principals and some parents.

According to Vuyi Cindi, Johannesburg north district circuit four manager, it cost R6 million to construct the arena. The money was raised by the school’s governing body. Cindi added that it was also from the SGB coffers that the eight new classes were built.

It took about a year to complete the build of the arena which will host indoor activities as well as sports such as, hockey and netball to name a few. The school currently has about 16 sporting codes. “We hope the arena will be kept as it is and that it will not be spoiled,” said Cindi.

Chief director of education, Dennis Macuacua was also in attendance at the grand opening and he commended the school for completing the build in record time. He shared the school embraced the vision of the department, which is the transformation of their institutions. “This is not about race, it’s about those areas many thought were dysfunctional, and how can we invest in them and make sure everything is functional and learners get the best out of it.”

Macaucua also expressed how previously many in the community thought this school would never make it but, as a department, they thought to invest in the correct leadership of the school. “And such days are the outcome of that partnership between the community and the department.”

Currently, the school sees 1 735 learners enter its gates, a far cry from 10 years ago when they only had about 500 learners. The arena is not finished yet, specific flooring still needs to be fitted which the school thinks will probably cost about R2 million.
