Students be warned, criminals are targeting you this exam season

BRIXTON – Students are urged to be extra careful as they make their way home from late-night study sessions.

Students have been warned to practice caution as they make their way to and from universities during the exam season.

It’s that time of the year when students across the country are burning the midnight oil to secure progression in their academics. Libraries and off-campus study groups and venues are to become the top trend but this comes with its own risks.

Brixton Police Station has urged students to be extra vigilant and cautious during this period. Spokesperson for the station, Jeanette Backhoff, said, “We need to warn all students to be vigilant against criminals that are opportunistic during this exam period. They are targeting students for valuables such as laptops, tablets and cell phones.”

Backhoff advised students to refrain from travelling with their valuables and said they should rather leave them at their homes or safe facilities offered by some institutions of higher learning.

The station has offered the following safety tips for students:

  • Do not to walk with your valuables exposed in the street.
  • Walk in groups as opposed to alone. Criminals mainly target students walking alone or at least two of them.
  • Do not talk to strangers.
  • If you walk during the night, walk where there is proper lighting.
  • Be vigilant at all times and be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or people.
  • Always give a time of when family, friends or housemates can expect you back at home and try to stick to it.
  • Avoid going into a congested street where you cannot walk properly.

Police have also warned students against opening false cases in an attempt skip exams, as they have experienced this in the recent past. The management of Brixton Police Station concluded that it would like to wish all students good luck with the end exams.
