Are you registered to vote?

Proof of residence will not be required for this weekends voter and candidate registration.

All systems go for voter registration between September 18 and 19.

South Africans will be expected to cast the vote in the 2021 Local Government Elections on November 1. This has resulted in the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announcing that voter and candidate registration for the 2021 elections will be reopened and take place between September 18 and 19. Over this weekend, all 23 151 voting stations across the country will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on both days for registrations.

What do you need to register to vote?

All those above the age of 16 years old can register to vote, but only those over 18 will be eligible to cast their ballot on the day. To register, you will need to be a South African citizen and in possession of a valid South African ID document. The ID document can be in the form of a green barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID or a Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC). Eligible voters must be registered at a voting station within the ward in which they reside. When registering, voters must provide an address or detailed description of a place of residence. Proof of address (e.g. in the form of a utilities account) is, however, not required for registration.

How to check if, and where, you are eligible to vote

To check your registration details (including where you are registered), voters can use any of the following:

  • Send an SMS with your ID number to 32810 (SMS charged at R1)
  • Download the IEC mobile app and enter your ID number
  • Check your voter registration status online on www.elections.org.za/pw/Voter/Voter-Information
  • Check at your local IEC office during office hours.

Residents can only vote at the voting station where they are registered during municipal and by-elections. According to the IEC, members of the community only have to re-register to vote if they have since moved to a new home or their voting district boundaries have changed.

All Covid-19 health and safety protocols will be implemented at all voting stations and the public will be expected to comply with these rules.
