A fire ravages Northcliff home

NORTHCLIFF – Survivors of the fire are said to have been rattled by the traumatic experience.

Fire Ops SA was the first to attend to a house fire that took place on Acacia Road, Northcliff on the evening of 8 June.

According to its CEO Wynand Engelbrecht, by the time they got to the house, at about 9.45pm, it was engulfed in fire. His approximation is that the fire could have started at around 9pm. By 10.30pm they started with their overhaul, which is a process of turning over debris to take out fire hotspots.

He explained that thankfully the people living in the house were not injured but, based on their experience, were thrown, “They lost everything in the fire and it must have been a traumatic experience for them.”

Sadly, however, of the nine dogs the people did have, two did not survive the fire. Engelbrecht did not know nor did he want to speculate as to what the source of this particular house fire was.

Within the greater Joburg area, Fire Ops SA on average attends to one fire every two days. Generally, at least six fires over the last two months were started by gas heaters. “People are not properly informed about gas safety,” Engelbrecht concluded.

At the time this article was compiled, Joburg Emergency Services were not available for response.
