Unlicensed guns off the streets of Sophiatown

SOPHIATOWN – Two suspects behind bars for being in possession of unlicensed firearms.

Two unlicensed firearms seized by the police on one day.

Sunday 18 April was the day that Sophiatown Police Station was able to remove two illegal firearms from the streets of their precinct. According to the station’s spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn, the first firearm was found as police were following up on an attempted murder case where a person was shot in Westbury. “The police members saw the alleged suspect vehicle and the members proceeded to approach the vehicle. As they started to search the suspects and vehicle they found one unlicensed firearm in their possession.”
The police arrested both occupants of the vehicle on charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The second firearm was discovered and seized by the police at around 2pm that day. De Bruyn said, “Sophiatown police members were doing patrols in Westbury when a man dropped his bag and ran from the police after spotting them. Police searched the bag and found an unlicensed 9mm firearm with 18 rounds of ammunition.”

The firearm didn’t have a serial number on it nor had the police been able to arrest the suspected owner of the bag.
Police continue to investigate both incidents as they look to make the area a safer place for all. Members of the public have been encouraged to engage with the police and inform them of illegal activity taking place around them. Those with any information on such should report it to the police and can do so anonymously on the police’s Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
