Wits proud of their female sports stars following the 2020 Women in Sport Awards

JOBURG – Wits University congratulated all their student-athletes who were nominated for this year's awards and wishes them yet another successful sports season.

Wits University women’s sports teams and individual stars were among the finalists for the 2020 Women in Sport Awards.

Hosted by Futballing Girls Johannesburg on 25 September, the awards were aimed at recognising, rewarding and appreciating the effort and hard work put in by female athletes. Both the university’s netball and soccer women’s clubs asserted their profiles by storming in as nominees for the coveted Team of the Year award, while footballer Nokwanda Ngcobo made the nominees list for Volunteer of the Year. Wits footballer Thabelo Mammburu earned a nomination for the Sportswoman of the Year award.

In the end, it was the Wits soccer club which secured a berth as finalists for Sports Club of the Year award. Wits netball became the second club from Wits to secure a finalist spot for the Sports Club of the Year award while also impressing as a finalist in the Team of the Year category.

Wits Yacht Club’s Emma Clark and Michaela Robinson were the institution’s nominees for Sportswoman of the Year. Yacht Club sports officer, Ntshembo Vukeya said, “I am happy that we get to recognise our female sport athletes and give them the recognition they deserve.” The netball club’s Panashe Chiranga and Simone van Reenen got the nod in the Sportswoman of the Year category. Van Reenen was also nominated in the Sports Achiever of the Year category. Netball sports officer Tebogo Rabothata said, “The club’s nomination shows that Wits University netball has quality in terms of playing personnel and staff doing a great job behind the scene.”
Wits Tang Soo Do Club’s Anushka Monema made the cut for the Sports Achiever of the Year category. She was a finalist in the same category at last year’s Wits Sport Awards and the subsequent 2019 Gauteng Sport Awards. Rounding up Wits’ nominations were Robyn Johnson, Nomnikelo Veto and Ashleigh-Jean Datnow who were Wits hockey’s very own star trio in the highly-contested Sportswoman of the Year category.

Sharmin Naidoo, Wits Hockey Club sports officer, said it was always great to have any player that was nominated for an award on any stage.
