Jozi Trails users warned of increased crime taking place along routes

EMMARENTIA – The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens will only have the Thomas Bowler Street main entrance and Olifants Road entrance open to ensure the safety of all users.

Jozi Trails is pleased to have the residents of Johannesburg back on their routes and trails after they were given the green light to do so with the latest Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

Jozi Trails managing director Albert van Urk stated that the reopening will do well for those needing a remedy for their stress. He said,” The ability to be outdoors and exercise is extremely important during times like this where lots of people have a lot more stress than what they used to have.”

Unfortunately, there have been a few criminal incidents taking place on the routes that have caused some concern for the community. Parkview Police Station has confirmed there has been an increase in common robberies including the targeting of those walking and exercising. One such incident took place along Marks Park on the morning of 7 August when a male cyclist was stabbed during a robbery. The two suspects allegedly took the cyclist’s bike and phone while the victim needed medical attention for his wounds. Van Urk expressed, “Subsequent to the hard lockdown, there’s definitely been an increase in crime in the public open spaces.” Police urged residents to leave their valuable items at home when out in public spaces such as parks.

Van Urk urged the public to stay safe from both criminal elements and the pandemic still face the global. “Enjoy the public open spaces and parks but enjoy them responsibly – responsibly from the perspective of Covid-19 and the other from a general safety and security perspective.”

Jozi Trails continues to advise trail users to not cycle/walk alone during early morning hours or in areas where there are very few people or users.

The Emmarentia Johannesburg Botanical Gardens only has the Thomas Bowler main entrance and Olifants Road entrance open during this time. This is to allow Covid-19 screening and to ensure the safety of all users.
