Man sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for house robbery

BRIXTON – Central police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said the victim saw one of the suspects passing by her house wearing the same clothes the next morning. The victim then called the police and the accused was apprehended.

On Tuesday, 11 August, 25-year-old Thokozani Zitha was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment at the Brixton Regional Court. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

According to Johannesburg Central police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, four suspects are alleged to have robbed a house in Vrededorp, Brixton on 2 December 2018, early in the morning.

“They gained entry by breaking a burglar bar off the window. The female victim was woken up by a male with a knife in his hand. He told her to keep quiet while his accomplices ransacked the house. They took a cell phone, laptop and amplifier,” Mbele explained.

Mbele said the victim saw one of the suspects passing by her house wearing the same clothes the next morning. The victim then called the police and the accused was apprehended. “He was granted bail which was later cancelled because he was interfering with the complainant. He remained in police custody until he was convicted,” added Mbele.

Mbele furthermore said that the police hoped that this sentence would scare would-be offenders away from committing the same crime.
