Linden trees wrapped in orange for Covid and community support

LINDEN – Trees in the green suburb were wrapped in orange in support of the fight against Covid-19 and to inspire some much-needed community spirit.

In a joint initiative between The Whippet Coffee Company, Hoërskool Linden, Pinnacle College Linden and Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys, trees in the Linden CBD were wrapped in orange in support of the fight against Covid-19 and to inspire some much-needed community spirit during this time.

The LindenHope initiative was the brainchild of popular local café the Whippet’s Divan Botha. Botha explained that they chose orange as Linden has its roots in a proud farming history, and the suburb used to be one of the biggest export regions of peaches to the United Kingdom. “Some of these trees stand strong in back gardens as new young South Africans climb their branches. This is why we chose orange to represent our suburb. Orange talks to life, it talks to our heritage and it celebrates a suburb with nearly a century of resilience and hope,” said Botha.

On 22 July, learners from the suburb’s schools and staff of the Whippet joined figurative hands in unity to help wrap the trees in their area in orange wrapping. “Trees in front of the Whippet and nearly 50 other trees in front of Hoërskool Linden, Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys and Pinnacle College Linden now boast their orange jerseys.

“Amidst this Covid-19 crisis, the youth and our community have no other option but to look at the future with hope. #LindenHOPE is an invite to every Lindenite to dress their trees in orange, to plant new trees as a sign of hope and to join us in our call for a better future. We hope that this can spark other suburbs to do the same,” said Botha.
Botha encouraged the community to support their local businesses, dress trees in their street, plant a new tree and share this message of hope on every platform you can. “Linden is an incredible suburb. The Whippet has called it home for nearly a decade. Its people are proud South Africans, open in their thinking, passionate about their families and they are proud to call themselves Lindenites.

“Every street has a street captain, we look after each other, your family’s safety is my family’s safety. SA’s best schools welcome young minds every morning and our trees tell the story of a suburb with nearly ninety years of precious memories.”

More information can be obtained about the project by visiting the Whippet on 7th Street in Linden, and the tree wrap is available from there for R45.
