Police arrest three car break-in suspects in Cresta

CRESTA – No serious injuries or fatalities were reported when police officers arrested car break-in suspects.

Fairland Police Station arrested three suspects on 23 June after being called to assist with a suspicious-looking vehicle. According to Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Clive de Freitas, the arrest came after the suspects spotted the police and tried to make a getaway before colliding with a vehicle. Shots were fired at the suspects’ car at the intersection of Judges Avenue and Arbor Road in Cresta. He explained, “A few shots were fired at the vehicle and it came to a standstill, that’s when the officers jumped out to catch the two suspects with the third being arrested where the initial report of the suspicious behaviour came.”

Judging by the equipment found on the suspects after their arrests, the police suspect that they might be involved in theft of and theft from motor vehicles. The car they were travelling with was registered as stolen and police found with multiple false number plates. “Computer boxes, Allen keys and other car break-in tools where found with the suspects.” No serious injuries were reported in the vehicle collision while the driver of the other car was taken to hospital shortly after the incident.

The Station Commander dismissed social media reports on the day which suggested that one of the suspects had been fatally shot by police. The three suspects were charged with being in possession of car break-in implements, reckless and negligent driving, resisting arrest and defeating the ends of justice. Police are also investigating any other criminal offences linked to the trio.
