21 Eskom employees test positive for Covid-19

The affected workers are all in the Western Cape.

Twenty-one Eskom employees and contractors in the Western Cape have tested positive for Covid-19, Eskom Chief Executive Officer, André de Ruyter confirmed earlier today (21 May) during a “state of the system” briefing. Those infected were, he said, currently receiving the necessary medical care.

The power utility added that ‘comprehensive and focused’ efforts were in place to protect employees and contractors, in compliance with the government’s Covid-19 health and safety regulations.

Measures taken to assist in the fight against the pandemic, it said, included:

  • Turned the Eskom Academy of Learning into a quarantine site
  • Produced large volumes of hand sanitiser in its research labs
  • Designed two types of cost-effective, non-invasive ventilators which are currently prototyped as part of Eskom’s ventilator initiative
  • Produced 100 000 low-cost N95 masks for healthcare workers and Eskom staff
  • Designed and deployed a low-cost walk-through full-body sanitising spray system which is currently in use at its Megawatt Park head office.
