Covid-19: Gauteng Legislature to hold inaugural online sitting on 19 May

Covid-19 lockdown rules are expected to be a key focus of the province’s first virtual meeting.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature is determined not to allow the Covid -19 lockdown to affect its functioning. To this end, it will hold its first-ever virtual House Sitting tomorrow, 19 May at 10am, marking the official launch of the Gauteng Digital Legislature.

A statement read, “The move to go digital aims to ensure that the business of the Legislature remains in full force, and that citizens’ rights and views remain the centre of our focus as we continue our fight against the virus.”

Speaker of the house, Honourable Ntombi Mekgwe will convene the sitting which Gauteng Premier David Makhura and other Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are also expected to attend. This will provide an opportunity for MECs to respond to questions posed by Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) as part of their oversight mandate to hold the Executive accountable. Issues relating to some of the decisions and activities of the provincial government during the nationwide lockdown are expected to be discussed.

The public is invited to watch the sitting which will be streamed live on the Legislature’s social media platforms as well as on YouTube.
