Police respond to mob justice in Brixton

BRIXTON – Police intervened when community members took matters into their own hands, beating the two suspects.

Police officers intervened in a case of mob justice yesterday (24 March) in Brixton after two men allegedly stole a television set.

The spokesperson for Brixton Police Station Jeanette Backoff said, “Brixton SAPS received a call of mob justice in the Brixton area yesterday, 24 March. On SAPS’ arrival, two guys were arrested for stealing a TV by security guards.”

According to various security personnel, the two suspects entered a woman’s house and demanded a TV, allegedly threatening her with a screwdriver. The suspects allegedly took the TV set but later discarded it when they were cornered by community members and passing motorists who are believed to have assaulted the two suspects.

Backoff added, “The police intervened and called an ambulance to take the suspects to a nearby hospital.”

Backoff explained that the complainant whose television was stolen did not want to open a case against the suspects. “The suspects also did not want to open a case of assault.”

Backoff concluded that the suspects were interviewed and profiled and it was found that they did not have previous or outstanding cases against them.
