With great power comes great responsibility

SOPHIATOWN – Newly promoted officers reminded that they are capable of handling anything thrown at them.

Police stations celebrate the progress made by their officers after several are promoted.

Tara Jaye Frank once said ‘People don’t get promoted for doing their jobs really well. They get promoted by demonstrating their potential to do more.’ This seemed to be the case at Sophiatown Police Station as they recently recognised and valued the efforts and potential of their officers by promoting them to a great rank in front of the station’s management, including the Station Commander Brigadier Alfred Ndebele. He along with his team congratulated the newly promoted sergeants. He said to the group, “By merely looking at you I know that you guys are committed to your work as the police. I am happy for all of you and well done.”

Various members of the station’s management shared their celebratory messages with the officers. They were told that the management is indeed ageing and will need to be taken over by the younger officers. They asked that they use their new roles to prove they are up for the task to lead the Sophiatown precinct into safer more peaceful times. They were also advised to lead by example as not only are there officers below them looking for guidance but the people of the communities they serve as well. The officers were reminded to stay proactive, reliable, corruption-free, easy to communicate with, respectful and understanding to the communities they protect and serve.

Captain TJ de Bruyn, spokesperson for the station, reminded the officers that they are more than capable to fulfil the roles they find themselves in. “As you progress the more responsibilities you will be given. Don’t ever think that you can’t handle them because you earned this rank. Always remember that you have what it takes to fulfil your duties.”

Brigadier Ndebele also encouraged the officers to further their education while working. “We have colleges here for you guys to use to develop yourselves. Use them to learn and improve so you can keep progressing to bigger and better things.”
