Wits students protest for accommodation after students seen sleeping at lecture halls

BRAAMFONTEIN – The students clashed with security officers and blocked parts of Empire Road in Braamfontein.

A video by University of Witwatersrand Student Representative Council (SRC) went viral early this morning (4 March) highlighting the lack of student accommodation available at the university. The SRC took to the streets to protest on what they say is the lack of student accommodation provided by the university causing heavy traffic on Empire Road.

In a tweet Wits SRC wrote, “When we resort to other measures we do so because we have exhausted all other forms of engagement. A storm is coming. It cannot be that under our leadership students are subjected to these inhumane conditions. Our students will be accommodated!”

Shirona Patel, head of communications at Wits University tweeted about the accommodation protest, “The real issue is that these group of 50 or so students have lost their funding and accommodation because they have failed repeatedly.”
She added, “The university has made available R17 million via the Wits Hardship Fund to assist those students who are passing and who genuinely require temporary accommodation and support. This was done in conjunction with the Wits SRC a few weeks ago.”
