A day of potjiekos

EMMARENTIA – Curry lamb shank pot blows judges away at this potjiekos.

On 22 February, the Protea Sports Club in Emmerentia had a fun-filled event as they hosted their potjiekos competition. Indeed the event was hosted for the members of the club to have a good time but was also aimed at making a difference in the community.

Jeanette Backhoff, one of the judges at the competition, said the event was one to remember. “The day was full of fun with a great atmosphere and young and old participated to make the event a huge success.”

Throughout the morning you could smell the aromas of the meat stewing with the vegetables and spices. Everyone present knew the judges would have a tough time deciding which one is best but a decision had to be made. Backhoff shared, “Nine entries were received and the two judges had a tough decision to make but at the end of the day a wonderful curry lamb shank pot won and the second place went to a beautiful springbok shank pot.”

Not only was it a fun day for those in attendance, but it was also a chance to help those less fortunate as the food would be shared with those that have none. Backhoff added, “Protea Sports Club played their part by assisting the community in feeding the needy with the competition. It was a privilege to be invited to be part of this great initiative and to see how families get together as a community to assist the needy.”

She thanked the club, organisers of the competition and participants for inviting her over to see how they cook, have fun and help the community.
