Sophiatown police arrest four on drug and gun charges

SOPHIATOWN – The group of four aged between 23 and 28 appeared in court on drug and firearm charges.

Work by police detectives has resulted in the confiscation of drugs, a firearm, and ammunition, and the arrest of four suspects.

Sophiatown Police are pleased to share their latest success following the arrests of four suspects in the area. According to the station’s spokesperson, Captain TJ de Bruyn, the drugs and weapons bust came as they were looking for a suspect wanted for robbery. He explained, “At about 5.30am on 15 January a group of detectives was at a flat to search for a suspect who was wanted for robbery.” The occupants of the flat refused to open the door for the police even after the police identified themselves. The police then forcefully opened the door to find four people inside the flat.

De Bruyn stated that the suspect they were looking for was not in the house at the time, but as they searched the house they discovered the drugs and weapons. He said, “While the police were searching for the suspect they came across, and confiscated, 97 Mandrax tablets, 29 packets of dagga, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, one unlicensed pistol, two bags of what is suspected to be drugs and 24 packets of chlorine acid.” They also found a small electronic scale which they suspect was used to weigh drugs.

The suspects were arrested shortly afterwards. De Bruyn said, “All four suspects were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.” The suspect’s aged from 23 to 28 and were due to appear in court for the charges. Police are still on the hunt for the suspect that they were initially looking for.
