Brixton police call on the public to be aware of the increasing theft of and from motor vehicles cases

BRIXTON – 'Don't leave your vehicle in the street, even if you will only take two or three minutes, your vehicle will be stolen in seconds,' says police spokesperson.

Police warn of increase in theft of and from motor vehicles.

Brixton Police Station is warning motorists and car owners that the theft of and from motor vehicles is still a popular crime. According to the station’s spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, this act is on the rise and the community needs to be aware of this to take the necessary precautions to avoid being a victim. She shared how the crime is mostly committed. “Most of the modus operandi is the same where the victims park their vehicles outside on the street or pavement and when they return the vehicle is gone or their belongings have been stolen out of the vehicle.”

According to Backhoff, they have been getting cases from different areas but areas most affected are Brixton, Melville, Mayfair, Mayfair West, Braamfontein Werf and Hursthill. Residents and motorists of Auckland Park and Langlaagte North are also warned of the trend. “These activities take place throughout the week especially on Fridays, Thursdays and Saturdays.”

The police are urging the community to get into the habit of parking their vehicles in their yards or in designated parking areas where there is proper security. Backhoff added, “Don’t leave your vehicle in the street, even if you will only take two or three minutes, your vehicle will be stolen in seconds.”

The community has been requested not to be negligent and to safeguard their property at all times and not to fall victims of crime.
