De La Salle martial artists do their grading

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College him soo do martial artists grade for their next level belts.

De La Salle Holy Cross College celebrated some of its learners taking their second round of gradings in the martial art of him soo do.

The school began this martial art programme in March and had its first gradings in June.

This second set of gradings featured various colour belts from white to purple to green.

Discussing the gradings, which martial arts students use to prove to their superiors they are worthy of higher belt levels, sabonim (instructor) Shane Comley-White said, “It was an evening of dedication, sweat, focus and hard work which paid off for all the attendees.

“The focus and effort and determination shown when it was time to break the boards was impressive and all managed to break with the required technique for their current belt level.”

Master Shane also thanked the family members and friends of the students who attended to support them.

“It’s a proud moment seeing everyone trying their hardest and showing what they are capable of, especially seeing the fun they have and how they support each other. It gives me inspiration while prepping for my fifth dan grading in December.”

His own students are preparing for their next grading at the end of November.

Master Shane introduced the martial art at Roosevelt Recreation Centre in September last year and now it has become an extra-mural activity at De La Salle Holy Cross College.

He plans to host tournaments between the college and other schools who participate in the martial art.

The Him Soo Do Roosevelt Dojang caters for children as young as six and there is no maximum age limit, which means many adults come through for training.

“Him soo do is based on the traditional Korean martial arts systems and teachings, ranging from open-hand and kicking techniques, grappling, throws, locks, weapons, fitness, discipline, focus, to control and a whole lot more.”

Master Shane encouraged anyone interested in the martial art to contact him.
