Trophies galore for Roosevelt Park Bowling Club

ROOSEVELT PARK – Local bowlers crowd the podium at district's toughest competition.

Three members of Roosevelt Park Bowling Club broke a club record when all three won silverware at the Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) Masters.

At the district’s toughest bowls competition, Shawn Thomas won the men’ open division while Jason Evans was runner-up, and Charles Joyce won the men’s veteran section.

“We are stoked for them, this is a great achievement in a tournament for the best players in the district,” said club president, Roy Putter.

“It is a competition where Proteas and top players play and this result has put us [Roosevelt Park Bowling Club] on the map.”

Putter explained that Evans is a Protea player who regularly represents South Africa in international tournaments, while Thomas and Joyce play for JBA against other districts.

“Our club is going from strength to strength and we seem to attract lots of good players,” added Putter, who has been president of the club for over 10 years.

“This while other bowling clubs are struggling. [Our success] is because everyone puts their shoulders to the wheel to ensure we keep running.”

This involves welcoming younger members gladly, holding social events such as braais, gatherings and potjiekos competitions at the club and also hosting development players from the Soweto Youth Development Programme.

The club has also opened itself to public use for corporate functions, 21st birthdays and more.

“We always say ‘a stranger is a friend you have not met yet’ and we encourage people to join our bowling club.”

Roosevelt Park will host the Bowls South Africa team’s practices for the World Bowls tournament at the end of September, and also act as headquarters for the Women’s Nationals in May next year.
