Amelia Bester and residents clean up koppie
FAIRLAND – Residents and various stakeholders in the community came together on the morning of 24 August to pick up litter in and around the koppie and park.
On 24 August Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester organised a clean-up at the Fairland Koppie with various stakeholders such as the Fairland Police Station, the CPF, urban inspector, private security companies, Pikitup, Radford learners and teachers as well as members of the community.
“We do have an issue with displaced people and today is mainly about picking up litter and cleaning up the koppie,” said Bester.
“This is an ongoing process and we hope to fence off this park through public-private partnerships so that we and the community will be able to maintain it. That is the call that we are putting out to the community today to come forward with donations towards putting up a fence and to sign a memorandum to that effect.”
Warrant Officer David Malan represented Fairland Police Station and he said, “The displaced people in the koppie mostly work in the area and then come sleep here because of lack of transport, money or them being too far from home.”
The clean-up was a chance for residents and important stakeholders to get together and make a difference as well as meeting their councillor and talk. The clean-up started at 8am with all who participated given big rubbish bags and going up the koppie to pick up litter and recyclable items they found.
Pikitup later came through to collect the rubbish pilled up at the park once the clean-up was over. All in all, the clean-up was a success with young and old residents coming together to make a difference in their community.
