Donations needed for fire victims

SOPHIATOWN – Assistance from the community and the general public is needed after three families lost everything in a fire on 6 July.

Police are pleading with the community to assist them with collecting donations for the families affected by the fire that broke out at the police quarters recently.

As beautiful and warm as fires can be in the middle of winter, they can also be a monster that destroys the belongings of families. This was the case after a fire broke out in one of the apartments at the Sophiatown Police flats on 6 July. Johannesburg Central Police Station Warrant Officer Jabu Mabuza is one of those devastated by the damage caused by the blaze.

Mabuza said, “We only have the clothes on our back left. We lost everything, our clothes, personal belongings and appliances.”

Mabuza’s reality is shared by two other families who were affected by the fire. They are currently doing all they can to restart their lives after the fire. They lost all personal possessions including clothes, documents, furniture, small office supplies and food.

Police are asking the community and general public to help the affected families by making any donations they can, as Olympic champion Hannah Teter once said, “People forget that it doesn’t take a big donation to help someone, just a lot of little donations.”

The families are in dire need of assistance, especially during this cold winter period. Items such as clothes for men, women and children, blankets, toiletries, and non-perishable food items will be highly appreciated by the people who do their best to protect us.
