Suspected robber in a critical condition following shoot-out

JOHANNESBURG – Bertha Street in Braamfontein has been closed off following a shooting incident. Traffic is affected and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele, police noticed a white vehicle and they immediately gave chase when the occupants of the car sped off. A shoot-out ensued between the four occupants of the vehicle and the police.

The shooting incident is said to have taken place on the corner of Juta and Station streets in Braamfontein on 15 July where the suspects are said to have opened fire on the police. The vehicle has since been identified as stolen.

Mpho Moloto, an eye witness, said that one of the suspects was shot in the head by the police, two were arrested at the scene and only one managed to flee from the scene.

Makhubele has, however, confirmed that two suspects were shot and injured and the other two were arrested.

Shawn Herbst from the communications office of Netcare 911 said that reports from the scene indicate that a 23-year-old adult male was shot in the head in what was alleged to be a robbery.

“Paramedics assessed the scene and found the patient in a critical condition and required advanced life support intervention to stabilise him,” said Herbst.

Herbst added that the patient was then transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

Makhubele said that three illegal firearms were recovered at the scene. The police will be opening and investigating a case of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of a hijacked vehicle.
