Mustangs still swinging it
EMMARENTIA – Local baseball outfit, Marks Park Mustangs still enters teams in the major and minor league.
Baseball is in full swing at Marks Park Sports Club, home of the Marks Park Mustangs for the last 39 years.
Every weekend, Gauteng Major League and Minor League games are held at the venue, with friends and family watching in support.
Mustangs chairperson, Allen McCabe explained that Gauteng baseball is currently in the winter season. As such, Mustangs has teams playing in the Winter Major League and the Reserve League. These players are aged 15 and up.
When the Summer League comes round again, league teams will comprise teams of players from U10 to U18 level.
“We are also the home venue of a Japanese baseball team,” McCabe said.
“This team is made up of Japanese citizens who are employed by their respective companies in the Gauteng region. Baseball is the National sport of Japan and is played extensively throughout the country in all schools, both junior and senior and right up to professional level.”
McCabe said the club is always looking for new members to join. A Saturday morning baseball clinic is perfect for children aged seven to 12 to give the sport a try. The clinic runs from 9am to 10.30am.
Senior practices are every Saturday at 2pm.
Boys, girls, men and women are all invited to play, said McCabe.
Due to the excellent facilities at Marks Park, the venue is also host to many baseball tournaments and events hosted at the national and provincial level. This included the National Baseball Championships in 2017.
